Bluray is needed for larger HDTV's.
I have a 42in plasma now, but I want the 54in that Panasonic have just released in the states.

Depends on whether it's a 1080p TV with HDTV being pumped thru it.
On my 42, I have to be back at least 2.8mtrs otherwise it looks a bit blurry.
You could watch bluray from about 1.8mtrs on a 50in 1080p.
