Yes there is. The plot of the first few games (up to the AC3) involves gods and goddesses from ancient times and shit ( i personally thought this storyline was stupid, but whatever floats your ship). The game is also possible because you get hooked up to a futuristic machine that lets you revisit your ancestors memories, and the HUD is explained by this. And there's no non human enemies in the historical part because that wouldn't make sense, but in all of the games the historical protagonist is looking for something out of this world (observatory, piece of eden, etc). Also, the only reason Edward is able to kill assassins and survive leaps of faith and shit is because he has the blood of those gods and goddesses in him, which explains his uncanny fighting and climbing ability (otherwise it wouldn't make sense).
